Best time to come
for Alaska fishing?
The best way to answer is that there is no bad time to come. We fish
from May 1st to Labor day & you will catch lots of fish anytime in
between. However saltwater king salmon & halibut combo trips are in May.
Kenai River King salmon is in June & July.
Kenai River silver salmon in August & pink salmon in even numbered
years.
Saltwater silver salmon & halibut combo trips are in August. Halibut is
excellent all year.
How do we get to Soldotna?
Fly into Anchorage, then rent a car & drive the 3 hour 150 mile scenic
paved highway to Soldotna. Your confirmation will have a map on how to
get to your accommodations.
What license’s & stamps do we need?
You will need a fishing license for all fishing, anglers under 16 are
free.
If you fish for King salmon a salmon stamp is needed. They sell both in
1,3,7 & 14 day periods ranging from $20.00 to $100.00. You can buy those
at most gas stations or tackle stores. We recommend Trustworthy Hardware
in Soldotna on the main highway.
What do we do with our fish?
Your fish is professionally cleaned & processed, vacuumed packed, &
froze. Fish processing is not included in your package. Fish is packed
in insulated boxes for transport as luggage or you can ship it. Shipping
cost about $3.00 a pound.
What to bring?
Bring warm clothing & dress in layers, hooded sweatshirts are nice.
Gloves, wool socks, Camera, jacket, full rain gear. We have rubber boots
for you to use. Tennis shoes are not good unless you like cold wet feet.
Tempetures may be warm in the day but on the water in the mornings it
can be cool. We also provide a cooler for you to use for food & drinks.
What about weather & bugs?
While fishing in boats you will not have a problem with bugs. If you do
a fly out or hike in somewhere you will want bug spray. The weather in
may thru August is usually nice with tempretures in the 45-65 range at
night & 55-80 in the days, Rain & wind can happen anytime.
Where do we eat?
Our Wendy Lane lodge is equipped with full kitchen & all the utensils
for you to fix meals there. There is also several fine restrauants,
grocery stores, & fast food joints in town. You can by pre made
sandwiches & lunch items at the store & bring them on the boat with you.
What about fishing equipment when not on
charters?
We provide all equipment while fishing on the boat. If you want to shore
fish at other times we do have 4 or 5 extra rods & reels for your use.
Buy your own tackle at the local tackle store.
Fly out trips & bear viewing?
We can arrange fly out fishing trips & bear viewing for you if you like.
A short ride across Cook Inlet puts you in bear country wher you can
watch bears fish for salmon at the same time you fish for them.
What about motion sickness?
Every body reacts differently to the ocean motion, we recommend that you
take medication to avoid being sea sick. Get the patch from your doctor.
Dramamine does not work
What else is there to do in the area?
There are many other things to do. We recommend the Kenai fjords tour in
Seward to see whales, sea otters, sea lions, & calving glaciers. Caribou
viewing on marathon road in Kenai. Bear viewing, Golfing, Musuem in
Homer, & all the visitor centers.
When do we need to book our trip?
The sooner you book your trip the more dates you will have to choose
from. Our heavy booking season is from January to May. However many of
our repeat clients book next years trip when they leave each year. If
you want a multiple day package & your dates are not flexible then book
in the fall.
Seasons & closed periods?
Halibut is open all year, King salmon closes on July 31st, Trout opens
on June 11th,
Silver salmon closes November 1st. The Kenai River is closed to guided
fishing on Sunday & Monday in May, June, & July. The river is also
closed on Mondays in August & September. The river is open for shore
fishing year round.
Do you have references?
Give me a call or Email & I can send you a list of references.
What if I am coming by myself?
Lodging prices are based on double occupancy so the individual cost may
be more.
We will do our best to mix you in with other anglers for fishing,
however you might be in different boats with different captains each
day.
